Metal-free crowns are a type of highly aesthetic restorations entirely made of ceramic. They can imitate natural characteristics of teeth, transmitting light like natural teeth. In such cases it is impossible to make a difference between Metal-free crowns and natural teeth. Their interior is made of materials described as biocompatible, which means that they do not cause any reaction of the surrounding tissue, enabling the gingiva to shape around them as if they were natural teeth.

The removal of dental substance (filing down of teeth) is far less extensive in the case of Metal-free crowns. For example, in order to make a metal ceramic crown it is necessary to remove 1.5 – 2.0 mm of dental substance, whereas in the case of Metal-free crowns, only 0.3 – 1.0 mm of dental substance needs to be removed.

In most cases, Metal-free crowns are made of zirconium or lithium-disilicate ceramic. Crowns made of zirconium are a very popular type of non-metal restorations. Zirconium has exquisite mechanical properties. This white material is one of the most solid ones. Initially used in space technology, after long-term research, it was also applied in some branches of medicine.

  • Why Is a Dental Crown Needed?

    A dental crown may be needed in the following situations:

    1. To protect a weak tooth (for instance, from decay) from breaking or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth
    2. To restore an already broken tooth or a tooth that has been severely worn down
    3. To cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn’t a lot of tooth left
    4. After Root Canal Treatment to protect the tooth from fracture.
    5. To hold a dental bridge in place
    6. To cover misshapened or severely discolored teeth
    7. To cover a dental implant
    8. To make a cosmetic modification.
    9. If crowns are not given after Root Canal treatment i may lead to failure of the RCT and it may lead to periapical infections and brittle tooth, it will end up in extraction of that tooth.

    For children, a crown may be used on primary (baby) teeth in order to:

    1. Save a tooth that has been so damaged by decay that it can’t support a filling.
    2. Protect the teeth of a child at high risk for tooth decay, especially when a child has difficulty keeping up with daily oral hygiene.
